In August 2006, Slovenian
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food prepared a proposal of the
national Act on coexistence of GM crops with other agricultural crops.
Institute
for Sustainable Development has organised and co-ordinated input of
numerous Slovenian NGOs within the Coalition for Sustainable Rural
Development* into the proposal. The aim is to set
binding and strict rules concerning the coexistence of GM crops with
conventional and organic crops.
*Coalition for Sustainable Rural Development is a coalition of 21 NGOs and one regional park working on issues related to agricultural and rural development policy, organic farming and Natura 2000. It was established in the beginning of 2006 and co-ordinated by the Institute for Sustainable Development.

A requirement for temporary ban of
GMO cultivation until the entering in the force of the national Act on
co-existence was sent again, this time to the Ministry of Environment -
minister Janez Podobnik, following the response of Min Agri on the
competences. MinAgri has expressed support for NGO proposal of the
temporary ban.
